On April 28, 2007, 34 chessplayers competed in the April Showers chess tournament at Ithan Elementary School in Bryn Mawr, PA.
Taking first place in the K-3 section with a perfect 4-0 score was 3rd grader Pranav Ranganathan (rated 972) of Pickering Valley Elementary School. Coming in second was 5-year-old Anand Bhatt (615) of Lansdale Montessori with 3 points.
In the K-8 section, Manuel Lorenzino-Sepp (979), a 5th grader from Abington Friends School, went 4-0 to finish in first place. In the last round, he defeated former teammate and top seed Kathryn Walsh of Spring Ford Middle School. Manuel was closely followed by runner-up Lucas Yonda (879), a 3rd grader from Hillside Elementary who scored 3.5/4. Beaver Creek Elementary of Downingtown beat out Hillside Elementary and Penn Christian Academy for first place in the team competition.
In the open section, parents, coaches, and other adults competed for the $100 first-place prize. The section was quite strong - the 10 players included International Master Bryan Smith (2457), National Master and current Pennsylvania High School Champion Dan Yeager (2239), National Master Peter Minear (2222), and experts Gennadiy Geyler (2089) and Joe Mucerino (2066). IM Smith crushed the opposition to finish with a 4-0 score, followed by NM Minear in second place at 3-1, with his only loss coming against Smith.
As usual, NM Stan Ritvin provided free analysis of all the students' games.
