Sixty scholastic chessplayers competed in the 2009 Fall Warmup chess tournament at Mother of Divine Providence School in King of Prussia, PA. 2nd-grader Praveen Balakrishnan of John Marshall Elementary School, rated 1344,Â won the tournament with a perfect 4-0 score.Â Praveen defeated top-seeded Praneeth Denduluri (1428) in the last round. The University Scholars were the top-scoring school team in the Championship section with a team score of 6.5.
Ryan Schiller of Friends Central School and Jonathan Feibusch of Newtown Elementary tied for first place in the K-6 U/700 section with perfect 4-0 scores. Both Ryan and Jonathan are now rated over 700, making them ineligible for this section in the future. The team competition came down to the very last round, as Mother of Divine Providence narrowly defeated Springton Manor Elementary on tiebreaks to win the team prize. Both teams scored 8.5 team points.
Hugh Rennie, a 4th-grader from Germantown Elementary School, won the 4-8 unrated section with a score of 2.5-.5.Â David Wang, a 1st-grader from nearby Caley Elementary, won the K-3 unrated section with a score of 3-0.
All the players had a great time. Our next tournament is the October Wave, to be held October 24 at Wayne Elementary School.
